TAN Twinkle is a display typeface from Tan Type Co, released in August 2021. The designer describes it as a hybrid between a serif and a sans serif. The capitals have very high contrast, with hairline-thin strokes next to heavy ones, and several letters have one playful twist. The W, for example, is drawn as a single looping stroke instead of two crossing Vs. The result looks elegant without being stiff, a good fit for fashion, beauty and lifestyle branding.

Is TAN Twinkle free?

No. TAN Twinkle is a commercial font, and Tan Type Co has not published a free or demo version. It is sold on Creative Market, where the desktop licence was $17 at the time of writing, one of the cheaper fonts in the TAN catalogue.

Two things tend to confuse people searching for a free copy:

  • tantype.com is not the foundry’s website. The site at that address is an independent font review site that links out to Creative Market. Its “free download” pages are not an official release from Tan Type Co.
  • “Twinkle” on DaFont is a different font. A typeface called Twinkle by Bright Ideas is freely licensed on DaFont, and there are others such as Twinkle Dream and Twinkle Lights. None of them is related to TAN Twinkle, and they look nothing like it.

If a site offers “TAN Twinkle free download” without a licence from Tan Type Co, the file gives you no right to use it in commercial work: logos, products, client projects or monetised social media.

What you get

  • OTF, TTF, WOFF and WOFF2 files. The web formats are included, but using them on a website still needs a webfont licence.
  • Uppercase, lowercase, numbers and punctuation, with ligatures and alternates.
  • Multilingual support and free future updates from the designer.

Licence and commercial use

The desktop licence ($17) covers installing the font on your computer and using it in logos, branding, printed products, packaging and social media graphics. That includes commercial work, so it is the licence most people need. Creative Market sells separate licences for other uses: webfont ($14.45) for embedding on a website, e-pub ($31.45) for ebooks and app ($133.45) for embedding in software. Prices were checked at the time of writing and can change.

How to use TAN Twinkle well

TAN Twinkle is a display face, and its hairline strokes need size to hold up. Set it large, for headlines, logos, product names and quote cards, and give it room. The capitals look best with a little extra letter-spacing. The looping W is the font’s signature, so words that contain it make the most of TAN Twinkle.

Avoid long paragraphs at small sizes, where the thin strokes fade out, especially on screens. For supporting text, a clean geometric sans works well, and letting it do the quiet work keeps TAN Twinkle special.

Using TAN Twinkle in Canva

Canva’s built-in font library changes over time, so check first: open a design, click the font dropdown and type “twinkle”. If TAN Twinkle is not listed, you can upload it yourself. Uploading fonts needs a Canva Pro, Enterprise, Education or Nonprofit plan; the free plan doesn’t allow it. Go to Brand Kit → Fonts → Upload a font and use the OTF or TTF file. If the upload is rejected, the usual cause is that the font file is not flagged as licensed for embedding, and that can’t be changed from Canva.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is TAN Twinkle font free for commercial use?

No. There is no free version. To use it commercially you need a licence. The Creative Market desktop licence ($17 at the time of writing) covers commercial use in logos, print and social media graphics.

Is TAN Twinkle copyrighted?

Yes. TAN Twinkle is owned by Tan Type Co and distributed under a paid licence. Downloading it from an unofficial site does not give you permission to use it.

Is TAN Twinkle a serif or a sans serif?

Both, in a way. Tan Type Co describes it as a hybrid between serif and sans serif: strong thick-and-thin contrast like a serif, but mostly without the bracketed serifs a classic serif typeface would have.

Can I use TAN Twinkle in Canva?

Check Canva’s font dropdown first. If TAN Twinkle is not listed, you can upload it on a Canva Pro, Enterprise, Education or Nonprofit plan via Brand Kit → Fonts → Upload a font.
